„You Seligenstadt are in no ways the least important under the seedlings of the Carolingian Empire”. This paraphrase of the word once coined by a biblical prophet one could very well apply to this peculiar old settlement on the river Main in Germany. The small town has a rich history due to its high rank in the Middle Ages. Evidence for this rich past is the fact that Einhard (740 – 840), one of the greats of the Carolingian Empire, chose this place to create his greatest literary and architectural achievements. Einhard was a close confident of Charlemagne and a faithful friend of Louis the Pius. He found his last resting-place in the Basilica in Seligenstadt which he has built, In remembrance to Einhard citizens and friends of Seligenstadt created the Einhard Prize in 1998. Every other year, this literature prize which is endowed with Euro 10 000 is awarded to the author of an outstanding biography. |
